One Lorry, One Day, One Fire
The sauna arrives in numbered pieces on a lorry with a crane, goes up on your footings in a day, and is fired before we leave.
Footings
A garden or cabin sauna stands on concrete pads or ground screws, set level to our drawing. You can do this yourself, or a local builder can, and we can recommend one near you. We check the footings from your photographs a week before delivery, and if a pad is out by more than a centimetre we say so then, not on the day.
Delivery Day
- The lorry arrives early.
Usually by eight, with two of us and the crane.
- Floor, walls, roof.
Lifted onto the footings in the order they came down, by the pencil numbers.
- Stove and chimney.
Set, sealed and checked by our chimney fitter.
- The second fire.
Lit before we leave, with you there, so you know how the stove draws.
Across the Ice
An island cabin with no road can still have a sauna. In January and February, once the ice is thick enough and has been measured, the pieces go across on a sledge behind a tractor, and the sauna is put up on the island the same way as anywhere else, only colder.
The job I am proudest of was a cabin sauna for a family on a small island in the lake south of here, in a March when the ice was only just thick enough. We measured it every morning for a week, took the sauna across in two trips on the last good day, and had the stove lit by four, with the whole family standing on the ice in their coats watching the smoke come out of the chimney, and the grandmother, who had wanted a sauna on that island since she was a girl, was the first one in.
